DIY Halloween Costume Ideas for Children

 

Halloween costumes can be expensive, especially for something that you only wear for one day out of the year. We compiled a list of fun, cheap costumes you can make for your kid that will make them happy and help you save some money!

Strawberry:

What you’ll need:

  • Red t-shirt/ Red t-shirt dress
  • Yellow craft felt
  • Scissors
  • Fabric glue/ thread
  • Green tulle (optional)

Directions:

  1. Cut teardrop-shapes from the craft felt to make seeds.
  2. Glue or sew them to the t-shirt.
  3. Optional: Made a headband out of green tulle to represent the stem/leaves on a strawberry.

Gumball Machine

What you’ll need:

  • White t-shirt
  • Pom Poms (multiple colors)
  • Fabric Glue
  • Red pants/ Red skirt

Directions:

  1. Glue pom poms on t-shirt. Let your child help you pick out where to put the different colored pom poms!
  2. Pair with a pair of red pants or a red skirt to look like an old-fashioned gumball machine.

Emoji

What you’ll need:

  • Yellow t-shirt/ yellow t-shirt dress
  • Fabric Paint/ craft felt
  • Stencil of emoji

Directions:

  1. Have your child choose his/her favorite emoji.
  2. Use craft felt or fabric paint to create the emoji face.

Lego

What you’ll need:

  • Rectangular-shaped box
  • Small plastic cups (Solo Cups)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Box cutter/scissors
  • Pencil
  • Paint and paintbrush

Directions

  1. Cut out arm holes and a hole for your child’s head. Leave the bottom of the box open for the legs.
  2. Glue the plastic cups to the front of the box. These will serve as the “bumps” on a Lego.
  3. Paint the box and cups. Let your child choose the color of Lego they want to be. Or, they can customize their Lego with stickers or some original artwork! The possibilities are endless!

Campfire

What you’ll need:

  • Red Shirt
  • Red, yellow, and orange construction paper or craft felt
  • Paper towel tubes
  • Brown pants (optional)
  • Fabric glue/hot glue gun

Directions:

  1. Cut flame shapes from construction paper/felt. Glue on to shirt.
  2. Secure paper towel tubes on shirt under the flames.
  3. Optional: You can make a stick to attach marshmallows to as well so your child can “roast marshmallows” with his/her costume.

Mario/Luigi
What you’ll need:

  • Overalls
  • Red shirt (Mario) or Green shirt (Luigi)
  • White Gloves
  • Red baseball cap or green baseball cap
  • White craft felt and red/green craft felt
  • Fabric glue/Hot glue gun
  • Optional: Fake mustache

Directions:

  1. This costume takes little time to assemble. You can cut out the letter “M” from red felt or the letter “L” from green felt and glue it on to a piece of white felt cut into a circle. Then, attach this to the hat.
  2. Add any additional Mario-themed accessories if you desire.
